The rugged Las Islas Ballestas islands in Peru are home to an incredible number of birds, such as guanay and neotropic cormorants (Phalacrocorax bougainvilliorum and P. brasilianus, also P. olivaceus), Peruvian and blue-footed boobies (Sula variegata and S. nebouxii), Peruvian and brown pelicans (Pelecanus thagus and P. occidentalis), Inca terns (Larosterna inca), and Humboldt penguins (Spheniscus humboldti). The piece of land protruding from the Pacific Ocean is very small and its neighbors are close by. Tourists are not allowed on the protected islands, but they can be viewed from boats. The smell of guano is a reminder of the lucrative fertilizer business of the past and the soundscape of the importance of protecting the island's wildlife.
