The thousand-year-old, oxygen-free peat of Black Swamp has yielded the bones of extinct megafauna, such as the diprotodon, the largest marsupial. The area is home to unusual Kangaroo Island grass trees (Xanthorrhoea semiplana ssp. tateana), which grow to a height of over a meter. The sun filters beautifully through their foliage, and the microclimate created by the "grass tufts" protects many animals from the cold and the scorching summer heat.
