Decoy Skeletons

starting at €90.00

I was given permission to borrow some beautiful wooden birds for photography. They had once been used as decoys, or decoy birds. Stuffed bird skins with feathers were attached to wooden frames. The decoys, anchored to the bottom, were then used to lure other birds of the same species to the area. In the old days, birds returning from migration were a vital addition to the sparse diet of the archipelago's inhabitants. Today, spring and summer bird hunting is banned in the EU, as it has been found to be harmful to bird populations. Unfortunately, in certain areas of the Finnish coast, dog-headed gulls can still be hunted between June 1 and 15.

NOSTALGIA – Memories of the past

Even in the dim light of the waterfront shed, you can see the practical beauty of the handle, worn smooth by decades of use. The spirit of the curly pine tree lives on in the tool – the tree from which it was crafted. In all the boxes and barrels, fishing net hooks, ice augers, corfs, decoy ducks, shovels and scrapers... The new cannot replace the old. It lacks the stories, spirits, and elves.
