After a proper winter, the ice in the Baltic Sea is often at its thickest in March. It breaks up slowly and painfully. Spring low-pressure systems lift the ice cover away from the shores, and meltwater and rainwater accumulate on the ice. Eventually, the ice darkens, cracks open, and the sea is freed from its winter shackles. The departure of the ice also frees the heart from the shackles of waiting for spring – at least for sea people and seabirds.

HOME SHORES – Pictures from the Finnish coast

My oldest, eternal love is the sea that laps at the shores of my homeland. I have been photographing it since I was a child, spending my summers in the Iniö archipelago. I have accumulated photos from several decades. I have also published two books about it: Kuohu – koukussa saaristoon (The Surge – Hooked on the Archipelago) and Meri, joka jalkojani huuhtelee (The Sea That Rinses My Feet). You can inquire about them by the Contact us page. In this set of images, I have compiled some of the most memorable shots from my home shores over the years.
