There is evidence of a stone cairn on the island of Lågskär in Åland as early as the 17th century, and the first lighthouse was lit in 1840. The current square conical tower was completed in reinforced concrete in 1920, and its light flashes more than 40 meters above sea level.

MAJAKKA seisoo maailman laidalla. Sileäksi kavutut portaat vievät lyhtyhuoneeseen. Sieltä voi nähdä pilvien varjot meren peilissä – ja majakkasaaren pienen maailman. 1950-luvulta lähtien majakat alkoivat jäädä ilman vartijoitaan tai jopa tyystin tarpeettomiksi. Vasta vuosituhannen vaihteen tienoolla säiden ja ilkivallan armoille hylättyjen merimerkkien kulttuuri- ja arkkitehtuuriarvot alettiin ymmärtää ja niitä ryhdyttiin pelastamaan. Jokainen, joka on osallistunut yhdenkin majakkamme pelastamiseen, on antanut lahjan kaikille suomalaisille.
