A sedge that grows in various damp places throughout the country, the common cottongrass (Eriophorum angustifolium), thrives in vast poor fens, along wetland shores, and in the tiny, sun-warmed crevices of rocky outcrops. Its spikes wither into fluffy tufts that, when drenched by rain and then dried by the wind, delight nature wanderer for a surprisingly long time.
