An essential piece of beach equipment—an inexpensive lifesaver—is made of natural cork and covered with sturdy fabric. A rope is attached to it with four strong straps, which anyone in the water can grab onto. That’s how it used to be. Nowadays, of course, they’re made of plastic—polyethylene, polystyrene, polypropylene, and who knows what. They just don’t have the same spirit.
