An essential piece of beach equipment—an inexpensive lifesaver—is made of natural cork and covered with sturdy fabric. A rope is attached to it with four sturdy straps, which anyone in the water can grab onto. That’s how it used to be. Nowadays, of course, they’re made of plastic—polyethylene, polystyrene, polypropylene, and who knows what else. They just don’t have the same spirit.

HOME SHORES – Pictures from the Finnish coast

My oldest, everlasting love is the sea that laps against the shores of my homeland. I have been photographing it ever since I was a child, spending my summers in the Iniö archipelago. I have accumulated photos spanning several decades. I have also published two books on the subject: *Kuohu – Hooked on the Archipelago* and *The Sea That Washes My Feet*.
