An important piece of beach equipment, a cheap lifesaver, is made of natural cork and covered with strong fabric. Four sturdy straps attach a rope to it, which is good for someone who has fallen into the water to grab onto. That's how it used to be. Nowadays, of course, they are made of plastic, polyethylene, polystyrene, polypropylene, and who knows what else. They don't have the same spirit.

HOME SHORES – Pictures from the Finnish coast

My oldest, eternal love is the sea that laps at the shores of my homeland. I have been photographing it since I was a child, spending my summers in the Iniö archipelago. I have accumulated photos from several decades. I have also published two books about it: Kuohu – koukussa saaristoon (The Surge – Hooked on the Archipelago) and Meri, joka jalkojani huuhtelee (The Sea That Rinses My Feet).
