The islands of Lake Finland were cleared by slash-and-burn farming starting in the 17th century. As the value of timber rose, this “predatory farming” was no longer viewed favorably. In some places, slash-and-burn farming did not decline until the 1930s. In its wake, the old deciduous forests provided a habitat for species that depend on decaying deciduous wood. In some national parks, the management of traditional landscapes and biodiversity—such as small-scale slash-and-burn, mowing, and grazing—has continued, and even a few crofts have been preserved.

HOME SHORES – Pictures from the Finnish coast

My oldest, everlasting love is the sea that laps against the shores of my homeland. I have been photographing it ever since I was a child, spending my summers in the Iniö archipelago. I have accumulated photos spanning several decades. I have also published two books on the subject: *Kuohu – Hooked on the Archipelago* and *The Sea That Washes My Feet*. Please contact me for more information about them. In this series, I have compiled some of the most memorable shots from my home shores over the years.
