The islands of Lake Finland were cleared from the 17th century onwards, and the forest was burned to make way for farmland. When the value of wood increased, "slash-and-burn" farming was no longer viewed favorably. In some places, slash-and-burn farming did not decline until the 1930s. After that, the old deciduous forests provided a habitat for species that require decaying deciduous trees. In some national parks, the management of traditional landscapes and biota, such as small-scale slash-and-burn farming, mowing, and grazing, has continued, and a few crofts have been preserved.

HOME SHORES – Pictures from the Finnish coast

My oldest, eternal love is the sea that laps at the shores of my homeland. I have been photographing it since I was a child, spending my summers in the Iniö archipelago. I have accumulated photos from several decades. I have also published two books about it: Kuohu – koukussa saaristoon (The Surge – Hooked on the Archipelago) and Meri, joka jalkojani huuhtelee (The Sea That Rinses My Feet). You can inquire about them by the Contact us page. In this set of images, I have compiled some of the most memorable shots from my home shores over the years.
