Surge

The water in the Baltic Sea is low-salinity brackish water. However, the salinity varies from surface water to deep basins and from the Bothnian Bay to the southern Baltic Sea, where it can be three times saltier than in the Bothnian Bay. Even the highest waves in the Baltic Sea are half as high as those in the oceans. The distance over which the wind blows and the duration of the waves limit their growth in a smaller basin. The shallowness of the sea also shortens the waves, but makes them sharper. Islands and shoals can also cause wave concentrations and beautiful surges like this.

HOME SHORES – Pictures from the Finnish coast

My oldest, eternal love is the sea that laps at the shores of my homeland. I have been photographing it since I was a child, spending my summers in the Iniö archipelago. I have accumulated photos from several decades. I have also published two books about it: Kuohu – koukussa saaristoon (The Surge – Hooked on the Archipelago) and Meri, joka jalkojani huuhtelee (The Sea That Rinses My Feet). You can inquire about them by the Contact us page. In this set of images, I have compiled some of the most memorable shots from my home shores over the years.
